Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation

We are an active research centre with a high number of publications, at the same time as participating in several national and international programmes. We have also received awards at different conferences in the specialisation.

The Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation teaching programme includes key aspects for research, such as training in clinical epidemiology and clinical research methodology. In addition, our residents undertake research competence courses to complement their practical work.

The Paediatric Surgery Unit is divided into the surgical sub-specialisations of digestive surgery, neonatal and foetal surgery, maxillofacial surgery, surgical oncology, thoracic surgery and urological surgery. We are a leader in paediatric surgery in Catalonia and perform the highest number of surgical procedures in Spain. This foremost position would not be possible without the work of other hospital professionals such as anaesthetists, paediatricians, radiographers and specialists, nurses and other professionals.

Clinical Biochemistry

Residents in clinical biochemistry have different objectives and specialised tasks according to which rotation phase they are in.

During their training period, resident doctors prepare to be on duty in the Accident and Emergency Department laboratories, where they calibrate, control and troubleshoot minor failures of analytical instruments. They also collect and extract samples from adult patients admitted to hospital, outpatients and paediatric patients.

The area of Clinical Biochemistry applies chemical and biological laboratory methods for the diagnosis, treatment, monitoring, prevention and research of diseases, and is comprised of experts from the Clinical Laboratory with a variety of professional experience, from primary care to the high level of specialization in a tertiary hospital. Our challenge is to maintain the high level of automation of the Central Laboratory, designed to allow us to develop highly specialised areas of knowledge in a leading centre such as Vall d’Hebron.

Activity in the anaesthesia and resuscitation specialisation is divided into five areas: Maternity and Children’s Hospital, General Healthcare, Traumatology, the Pain Management Unit and the Pere Virgili Health Complex, and the Surgery Unit.  The Anaesthesia Department also has three Resuscitation Units and numerous recovery areas for postoperative care. Vall d’Hebron University Hospital is a global leader in the field ; 49,000 anaesthetic procedures were recorded in 2015, 11% on infants. In addition, we have pioneered the creation of a Pain Management Unit, in which anaesthesia and resuscitation play an important role and with more than 3200 analgesic procedures recorded per year. The Anaesthesia and Resuscitation Unit at Vall d’Hebron was created in 1955 and is currently one of the units with the highest potential in Catalonia and Spain as a whole, with 105 consultants and 45 residents.

Radiopharmacy

Radiopharmaceuticals are used in Nuclear Medicine as contrast liquids which are injected into patients intravenously to enable non-invasive internal observation. In this way, molecular imaging of the body or the pathology that is being studied can be obtained. Radiopharmacy as a medical specialisation therefore deals with the study of physical, pharmaceutical, chemical, biochemical and biological aspects of radiopharmaceuticals.

Internal Medicine

Internal medicine is a core medical speciality that is practised primarily in hospital settings, providing comprehensive care to sick adults. It uses a medical approach in the prevention, diagnosis, therapeutic indication and follow-up of diseases in adults, including during their rehabilitation and palliative care. Internists are the backbone of the hospital, offering their versatility in acute and emergency hospitalisation; carrying out consultancy roles in primary care; and offering innovation in areas other than conventional hospitalisation and in the socio-health field.
