Among the Psychiatry, Mental Health and Addictions research group’s lines of research are Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in adults, dual pathologies associated with addictions, cross-cultural psychiatry or the implications of genetics in psychiatry.

In this field, they are working on the clinical, biochemical and molecular aspects of pathologies related to development patterns, growth retardation, sexual development disorders or aspects related to childhood obesity, such as metabolic complications or therapeutic approaches.

The team has different consolidated lines of research, including neurotraumatology, research into hydrocephalus and alterations in cerebrospinal fluid dynamics, and research into congenital craniocervical anomalies.

The UNINN research group’s projects, traditionally clinical, incorporate basic research while still maintaining a patient-focused approach. One of its main aims is to increase translational research to improve prognosis and quality of life in patients.

The group’s main research areas are the study of myelomeningocele, more commonly known as spina bifida, and congenital diaphragmatic hernia. It is also researching lip and palate fissures, amniotic band constriction, gastroschisis, cell therapy and tissue engineering.

This group also investigates new techniques and devices, and the application of robotic surgery, as well as the development of microsurgery as a reconstruction technique in craniofacial surgery.

The main goal of the group is the study of proteins that are capable of antagonising receptor-mediated cell death, as well as their relation to survival, differentiation and the various signalling pathways.

The research group in systemic diseases studies patients with systemic lupus erythematosus, antiphospholipid syndrome, systemic scleroderma, vasculitis, dermatitis, Sjögren syndrome or autoinflammatory syndromes. The research is aimed at studying the pathogenesis, biological and clinical expression, morbidity and mortality and the analysis of patients’ response to pharmacological treatments. The ultimate aim is diagnostic improvement, clinical monitoring and prognosis for patients.

The group’s research projects fall into two main areas. On the one hand, the progression of renal insufficiency, focused on the nature of kidney diseases and kidney transplant. In this area, they are also studying the recurrence of kidney disease after transplant. On the other hand, the group deals with atheromatosis in chronic kidney disease.

Due to its clinical nature, the research team has a space in which to conduct clinical trials and observational studies. In terms of certification, the group belongs to the kidney research network at the Institut Carlos III (REDinREN).

This group deepen in the knowledge of the epidemiology and the detection of infectious agents relevant for the safety of the products supplied by the Blood and Tissue Bank.

The research group’s main line of research is the physiopathology of diabetic retinopathy, and approaches to this pathology through integrated biological systems. In this field, Dr. Simó, the Head of the research group, is the coordinator of the  EUROCONDOR Consortium, included in the 7th Framework Programme financed by the European Commission.
