Plastic, Cosmetic and Restorative Surgery

During their training, residents learn about different aspects of internal medicine, with particular emphasis on cardiology, pulmonary pathology, the renal system, and diabetes mellitus. For this reason they do rotations in Pneumology, Nephrology and Endocrinology. After the rotation, specialists deepen their knowledge in intensive care for trauma and burns patients. During their final year, specialists have the opportunity to rotate through specialised areas such as hand surgery or paediatric plastic surgery.

Intensive care medicine deals with assisting the recovery of vulnerable patients with, or potentially at risk of, life-threatening conditions. In the course of its work, the Intensive Care Medicine Teaching Unit collaborates with Intensive Care Medicine from the General and Traumatology Departments, the Coronary Care Unit, Postoperative Cardiac Surgery Care, Internal Medicine, Pneumology, Digestive System, A&E and Anaesthesia. Our teaching unit is amongst those with the greatest capacity for beds for critical patients. Because of this, the Intensive Care Unit stands out for performing the highest number of lung transplants worldwide, as well as treatment of infectious diseases in oncohaematology and acute stroke patients. In addition, the Traumatology Intensive Care Unit specialises in neuro-trauma patients and is a leader in burns and spinal cord injuries.

Clinical Pharmacology

In Internal Medicine, residents learn to take a full medical history, perform physical examinations, interpret clinical semiology and read laboratory  tests and diagnoses, as well as assign pathology treatment guidelines. Communicating with patients and their families plays an important role during this rotation, in addition to writing admission and discharge assessments. Therapeutic consultation and drug safety are also developed, in which tasks include coding adverse reactions.
