Otolaryngology (Ear, Nose and Throat)

Otorrinolaringologia a Vall d'Hebron
The Otolaryngology, or Ear, Nose and Throat Department is a medical and surgical specialty offering integrated care, and is responsible for prevention, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation following diseases of the ear, nose, mouth, pharynx and larynx. These body parts are responsible for breathing, swallowing, hearing, balance and phonation: speaking, hearing and smell. It also treats disorders of the face and neck, as well as the organs they contain.

Description

Our Department is responsible for treating pathologies in Otolaryngology, more commonly known as Ear, Nose and Throat, problems that are highly prevalent among the general public with both acute and chronic processes. Evidence of this can be seen in the fact that in primary care, family physicians and paediatricians spend 40% of their time daily on treating ear, nose and throat problems. Every year, more than 31,000 patients receive care from our Department, with more than 15,800 initial visits each year, more than 15,200 subsequent visits and more than 1,250 operations.

The medical and surgical side of our Department provides care for all ages and is effective, efficient and high-quality, thanks to our commitment and professional experience. Our Hospital is widely renowned for our expertise in treating cancer in the head and neck, sleep apnoea syndrome (with the introduction of robotic surgical treatment), vertigo, tinnitus (when the patient hears sounds that are not actually there), genetic hypoacusia (different degrees of deafness), ear surgery, as well as paediatric ENT care.

Our staff include professionals who work in multidisciplinary treatment teams, both with adults and children, and we have close links with professionals from other specialisations, such as neurosurgery, thoracic surgery, maxillofacial surgery, plastic surgery, paediatric surgery, oncology, radiology, anaesthesia, nutrition, dermatology, internal medicine, nursing, speech therapy as well as researchers in order to improve patient diagnosis and treatment.

Our multidisciplinary approach allows us to offer high resolution diagnosis and therapy, personalised for each particular case. Our decision-making process involves agreement by the whole team at weekly clinical sessions, in which particularly complex cases are commented on and the decision taken about which are the most suitable treatments for each patient. This task means all processes offer well-defined protocols.

Research

As a Department involved in continuous progress and research, we have our own internal research group, with an integrated laboratory at the Hospital.

Teaching

When it comes to teaching, we not only have professionals from our Department at the Faculties of Medicine and Psychology offering courses each year, but we also have experts in training from other centres, who carry out rotations in our Department. The teaching activity carried out at our Department focuses on three main areas:
  • Undergraduate teaching. We offer theoretical and practical teaching at the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB), the Faculty of Medicine (Medical Degree) and the Faculty of Psychology (Degree in Speech Therapy), all year round.
  • Postgraduate teaching. Specialist training in ENT, four-year training programme. We collaborate in training other specialists who require basic knowledge and training in ENT (family doctors, paediatricians, etc.) to practise their specialisation.
  • We offer continuing education, mainly through specific sessions run by the Department.
