Clinical Nanomedicine and Advanced Therapies Research Centre. Renal Physiopathology

CIBBIM-Nanomedicina. Fisiopatologia renal a Vall d'Hebron Institut de Recerca

One of the main focuses of our laboratory is research into the role androgens play in renal physiopathology, as well as early detection of specific and sensitive biomarkers for kidney dysfunction. The Hospital’s Nephrology and Paediatric Nephrology units participate in the group.

Description

The group is working on understanding the mechanisms involved in renal physiopathology. One of its main lines of research is the role that androgens play. Another important part of the group’s efforts is the early detection of biomarkers for kidney dysfunction, with high performance proteomic analysis and blood and urine samples from patients transplanted under different immunosuppressant regimes. The relationship between the institute’s nephrologists, urologists and pathologists promotes collaboration with the aim of identifying potential biomarkers and therapeutic targets that may be useful in future clinical interventions.

In terms of paediatrics, the group is investigating hereditary kidney disease, haemolytic-uraemic syndrome, focal segmental glomerulosclerosis, paediatric dialysis, paediatric kidney transplantation, and chronic kidney disease in infants and adolescents. In adults, the group is working on cancer and kidney transplants.

It is also studying the possibility of using sensors to detect biomarkers and nanoconjugates for pharmacological release, opening up new perspectives for patient monitoring and targeted therapy.
