Sleep Unit

Unitat del Son a Vall d'Hebron
The objective of this Unit is to offer comprehensive care in the diagnosis of sleep pathologies, in order to cover all areas: sleep pathology, hypersomnia, insomnia, parasomnia and circadian disorders, for patients of all ages. These disorders represent a public health problem, due to the increase in the number of cases and the social and health consequences they have.

Description

Sleep disorders require a multidisciplinary approach when it comes to diagnosing and treating such problems. This has been accepted for some years now, both nationally and internationally. These pathologies are: excessive daytime sleep or hypersomnia, difficulty sleeping or insomnia and somnambulism, sleep talking, nightmares, which are part of the parasomnia group, or circadian alterations, which is when periodic biological variables are altered.

The Sleep Unit is part of the Pneumology Department and is a wide-reaching functional unit, which helps to ensure continuity of care at different levels, primary and hospital care, coordinated by two medical specialties that have been linked to this pathology for more than 25 years.

The medical team is run by Dr Odile Romero, head of the Neurophysiology Section and Dr Gabriel Sampol, a doctor from the Pneumology Department. Pulmonologists from primary care centres are also incorporated, as well as paediatricians, otolaryngologists, etc. The Unit also collaborates actively with several clinical departments at the Hospital.

Care is provided through outpatient consultations, that are currently distributed between the ground floor, second floor and the Paediatrics Outpatient Department, and the second floor annex, where all the examinations are carried out. The Unit is also responsible for significant teaching activity, and pursues several lines of research.

The Sleep Unit is accredited by the Spanish Society of Pneumology and Thoracic Surgery as a high-complexity multidisciplinary unit. This is the highest level awarded by the entity, making Vall d'Hebron one of the few centres in Spain to boast the two accreditations that currently exist nationally, as since 2011 we have also enjoyed the highest level of competence from the Spanish Medical Accreditation Committee for Sleep Disorders (CEAMS).
